DMV Office vs. Registration Service in Bakersfield: What's the Difference?

By Ramos Auto Registration Services · Published

A registration service in California is a private business the DMV has authorized under its Business Partner Automation program to process certain transactions, print stickers and registration cards, and charge a service fee on top of the unchanged state fees. The DMV office charges no service fee and handles everything, including the things partners can't, such as driver's licenses and REAL ID. For a renewal, transfer, duplicate title or replacement, the only real difference is the line.

What is a DMV business partner, exactly?

The DMV's Business Partner Automation program authorizes qualified partners to process vehicle related transactions. Partners connect to the DMV's system, post a surety bond, pass background checks, and in return can complete registration work from their own storefront, including issuing validated registration cards, full-year registration stickers and license plates. Every licensed partner has a profile on the DMV's website listing the services it offers; ours is linked at the bottom of this article.

What can a registration service do, and what can't it?

The DMV's program page lists the transaction types: full year registration renewals (partial year registration is not allowed in BPA), registered owner transfers, legal owner transfers, replacement titles, new vehicle reports of sale, salvage and junk applications, and personalized plate assignments. The DMV's profile for our office adds planned non-operation, temporary operating permits, replacement plates and stickers, release of liability, vehicle verification and more. What no partner does is anything about you as a driver: licenses, ID cards, REAL ID, written or driving tests, or driving records.

Why are the fees the same, and where does the service fee come from?

Because the fees are the state's. A partner cannot adjust the DMV's fees; it collects them and passes them through. The DMV's program rules then say participating companies are allowed to charge their customers a service fee for each type of transaction processed through to completion, and licensed registration services aren't capped the way dealers are. That service fee is the whole business model, which is why California requires registration services to tell you that the same services are available from the DMV without it. We print that sentence on our own site.

When is the DMV office the right choice?

When your task touches your license (REAL ID, renewals, name changes), when you need a partial-year registration, when a salvage or branded-title vehicle needs a CHP inspection, or when the service fee matters more to you than the time. A kiosk inside a DMV office is also a good option for a plain renewal with everything already on file. For everything else on the table above, the question is only whether you'd rather spend the time or the fee.

How do I know a registration service is legitimate?

Look it up on dmv.ca.gov. The DMV publishes a page for every licensed business partner, with its address, phone, hours and service list, and the note that additional fees may be applied by this partner. If a business claiming to do DMV work isn't in that directory, walk out. Reviews help too: ours mention the owner by name and the time a renewal took, which is the kind of detail people don't invent.

From the counter

Ramos Auto Registration Services is a licensed DMV business partner at 332 E Norris Rd, Ste 3, in Oildale; the DMV's partner profile for the office lists renewals with sticker printing, transfers, replacement titles, PNO, temporary permits, vehicle verification and more. We are not a DMV office, and the DMV will do the same transactions for free.

What the fee buys is a counter with no line and a person who reads the record first. Customers have written that we did what the DMV couldn't or wouldn't do, that a renewal took under ten minutes, and that it was worth the cost. We'd rather you decide that with the fee in front of you, so the fee sheet is posted at the counter and on this site.

Frequently asked questions

Is a registration service cheaper than the DMV?

No. The state fees are identical, and the service adds a fee for processing. It is faster: a licensed partner processes most transactions at a walk-in counter and prints the sticker and registration card on site.

Can a registration service renew my driver's license or do REAL ID?

No. DMV business partners process vehicle transactions only. Driver's licenses, ID cards, REAL ID and driving tests are handled by DMV offices and, for some renewals, the DMV's website.

Are the stickers from a registration service real?

Yes. A licensed partner issues the registration card and sticker directly from the DMV system, the same as a DMV office. Verify any business in the DMV's partner directory before paying.
